Pretty soon, the recent feats of the Overton High School powerlifting team are going to be the stuff of legend.

"Pretty soon" might just be now.

Overton's boys powerlifters returned to the UIL Class 1A state championship meet in Aldine Saturday, claiming their secondstraight 1A state powerlifting crown.

The team is coached by Roderick Portley.

Overton earned first-place finishes in two classes, and set a few state records in the process. Jamal Thompson won first place in his weight class (181.5 pounds) and set new state records at the 1A level for his 580-pound squat, his 575-pound deadlift and his overall total, 1,470 pounds. Thompson also had a 315-pound bench press.

Teammate Marcus Mitchell also set some new state marks. His 675-pound squat is a new statebest for the 1A 220.5-pound weight class, as is his 1,560 pounds overall. Mitchell, who also benched 335 pounds and had a 550-pound deadlift, received best squat for the heavyweight division.

Todd LeBrun took second place in the 198.5-pound class, but tied a state record with a 600-pound squat, and set a new record at the level with a 390- pound bench. He also had a 440- pound deadlift, and 1,430 pounds total.

Heath Russell was second in his weight class (165.5 pounds) and set a new state record at the level for a squat (550 pounds) and a new record for the class for the deadlift (600 pounds). He also received best overall total for the lightweight division (1,410 pounds) and best deadlift.

Jeffie Wilson didn't place in the 132.5-pound class, but competed well in his class, Portley said. Wilson had a 365-pound squat, a 225-pound bench, and a 435- pound deadlift (1,025 pounds total).

The Overton girls powerlifters went back to the state meet this year, too, and finished second two weeks ago in Killeen.

Overton had a pair of firstplace finishers. Megan Cook had a 340-pound squat, a 165-pound bench, and a 345-pound deadlift (850 total) and received best lifter in the state at that weight class.

Teammate Alicia Thomas had a 300-pound squat, a 130-pound bench and a 290-pound deadlift (720 total).

Sydney Luman and Courtney Cox both finished fourth in their weight classes. Luman (97.5 pounds class) had a 165-pound squat, a 90-pound bench and a 190-pound deadlift (445 total) and Cox, in the 181.5-pound class, had a 230-pound squat, a 105 bench and a 250 deadlift (585 total).

Hannah Waggoner also competed for Overton, finishing fifth in the 114.5-pound class. Waggoner had a squat of 230 pounds, a bench of 90, and a deadlift of 215 for 535 pounds total.
