LC Homecoming Saturday LC Homecoming SaturdayBy MITCH LUCAS sports@kilgorenewsherald.comAfter a roaring out-of-the-gate 3-0 start to the six-man football season for the Leverett's Chapel Lions, it's been a quiet last few weeks - it's been four straight losses for the Lions, who are playing a much, much more difficult schedule in their second year since resuming a football program. The Lions will try to stop that four-game winning streak with yet another home game this Saturday - homecoming against Brazos Valley, a 4:30 p.m. kickoff (with homecoming festivities held at 4 p.m. prior to the game). It's the next-to-the-last game of the season for the Lions, who have an open date next week and then close the season at, ironically enough, Brazos Valley on Nov. 3. The Lions don't play in any kind of a district yet - head coach Matt Everett and the school's leadership thought that might be overwhelming the first two years of the program. But next year, unless plans change, LC could be in a district with Apple Springs, Fannindel and others. Everett's thoughts are solely on this season, though, and trying to end it with a good taste in everyone's mouths after that last loss, this time a much closer 42-36 defeat at the hands of Dallas Winston, the state's No. 3-ranked team. "We were trying to run the clock as much as possible," Everett recalled, stating that his team was leading 34-32, with five minutes left. "We lost a fumble, and they scored pretty quickly. We actually got the ball back with about three minutes left, and we were moving downfield. But we just couldn't convert on fourth down. We turned it over on downs, and they won the game." Everett was not disappointed in his team's effort one bit, he said. We played a lot better than the last few games," he noted. "The kids hung in there and they played hard." Sophomore running back Daniel Thompson finished the contest with nearly 300 yards rushing, and started the game on a high note - a 60-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. Unfortunately, it was called back. "That kind of set the tone," Everett said. Brazos Valley is a tough opponent, the coach said. "We beat them by three last year," he said. "They're much-improved. They play a lot of tight stuff. They only dress out like 10 kids, but all of them, one through 10, can play. Hopefully, homecoming will lift us up a little bit." Brazos Valley lost to Apple Springs, 49-41, last week - Apple Springs scored three of those touchdowns on defense. LC will be playing without Javier Chavez, who suffered a knee injury against Winston last week.
