KC safety Ejike player of the week
ERRIK EJIKE Kilgore College safety Errik Ejike has been name Southwest Junior College Football Conference Player of the Week for his defensive performance in Saturday's 23-21 victory over Trinity Valley.
This is Ejike's first time to receive the award as he becomes the second Ranger defender honored this season.
Against Trinity Valley, the heady sophomore set up Kilgore's go-ahead touchdown with a fourth-quarter interception, then knocked away the Cardinals' potential game-tying twopoint conversion pass with less than two minutes remaining. He also posted nine tackles.
"Since Errik has been starting for us here at safety, I haven't called a defensive secondary coverage. He coverage. He does that for me," said Kilgore head coach Jimmy Rieves, who also serves as defensive coo rd i n a t o r. "And, knock on wood, I don't think we've had one blown coverage. He always makes the right call and gets our guys in the right position.
"I can't say enough about how much Errik means to this team. He is a great football player but, more importantly, he's an even better young man."
The Tyler Lee product has ignited the Ranger defense over the past four weeks, posting 38 tackles, two interceptions and recovering one fumble he caused.
Blinn quarterback Brad Guidry (offense) and Rondal Wilson of Navarro (special teams) were the other SWJCFC honorees for the week.
Kilgore (3-4, 2-2) looks to secure a conference playoff spot this weekend as they travel to Miami, Okla. to take on Northeastern Oklahoma (1-5, 1-3) in a 2 p.m. kickoff. Read more about the game today in Game Time Weekly, the special section in the middle of this paper.
