KILGOROUND

MITCH LUCAS

AFTER AN OPEN DATE, the Kilgore High School football team is back in action Friday night here R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, and this time, it's district play.

The Ragin' Red opens District 12-4A play at home against Whitehouse, Friday at 7:30 p.m. Whitehouse (2-1) was also off last weekend, as was most of the district. Kilgore's last game was 44-10 victory over Atlanta on Sept. 15.

The Kilgore College Rangers might be 1-3 so far on the season, but they're only 1-1 in Southwest Junior College Football Conference play, and still stand a great chance of making the conference's playoffs. KC steps out of conference Saturday, though, traveling to West Texas to take on Ranger, a 3 p.m. kickoff.

The Rangers' annual conference showdown against Tyler Junior College is next weekend at Rose Stadium. IF YOU'RE FREE TONIGHT, come out and support the Kilgore High School volleyball team as the girls take on Pine Tree. Freshmen play at 5 p.m., followed by junior varsity and then varsity, with varsity likely starting around 7, maybe 7:15 p.m.

+++ THE KILGORE HIGH SCHOOL HI-STEPPERS will hold their eighth annual sporting clay tournament at Prairie Creek Sporting Clays on Saturday, Oct. 14. Registration will begin at 8 a.m., and there is an entry fee of $50 per shooter, or $200 team entry for four and includes lunch. Contact Kim Krantz at (903) 984-3300 or (903) 984-8917 for more information.

+++ THERE ARE STILL A few spots open in the morning for entries in the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce golf tournament,

to be played at Meadowbrook Country Club next Tuesday, Oct. 3. The tournament, one of the chamber's biggest fund-raisers of the year, is a six-person scramble format. Prizes will be awarded to winning teams, contests will be held, lunch will also be provided for players, beverages will be available on the course and door prizes will be given to players as well as a goodie bag. Also, hole sponsorships are still available. Call Sharon at the chamber at (903) 9845022 for more information.

+++ I PLACED THIS IN LAST week's Tuesday Kilgoround, and it's even closer this week, but it's important. The Rotary Club's annual fund-raising fish fry will be Saturday, Oct. 7 at the Kilgore Community House from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children

under 12, and can be purchased from any Rotary Club member or at the door. The community house is located right on Highway 259 in front of the city pool, near the shrubbery that spells out Kilgore. ON the menu, as usual: fried fish, French fries, hush puppies, tomato relish, and other items, like pickles and onions. The food is prepared by Rotary Club members and served with help of the members of Boy Scout Troop 252. The proceeds from the event go to help fund 11 local scholarships to Kilgore College, and one international scholarship to KC.
