Fannindel visits 1-0 LC Saturday

The grade so far on Leverett's Chapel's return to the gridiron has got to be at least a B+, if not an A.

In the seven games played since LC reinstated football, the Lions - a six-man program for now - are 5-2, including a 44-25 win over Apple Springs to open the 2006 season last Friday night.

This week, LC is home again, bringing Fannindel to town. LC faces Fannindel on Saturday night at 6 p.m.

"They're really athletic," LC coach Matt Everett said of Fannindel. "They have some good athletes. But they're not overly aggressive. They do have good team speed. We're going to try and be physical up front, and run the ball and see how things go."

"Things" went well against Apple Springs. AS scored 72 points on Leverett's Chapel last year. This year, it was a far different story.

"We were down at one point 25-14 in the second quarter," Everett explained. "We had nine fumbles (three lost) in the game. That kept them in it. Once we got the jitters out, things went pretty good. They started cramping up badly. We were just in better shape, and that was the difference, I believe, in the game."

LC faces Apple Springs again on Sept. 29.

LC's Daniel Thompson finished with 12 carries for 108 yards and a pair of touchdowns, and had nine solo tackles on defense. "He was all over the field," Everett said. "His long was only 17 yards. But he really played well." Thompson also had a 60-yard kickoff return.

Robert Harris had eight carries for 86 yards and a score, and on defense had a fumble recovery for a touchdown on the very first Apple Springs play from scrimmage.

Hunter Hammontree was 3for-5 with 39 yards passing, and was 4-of-5 in extra point attempts.

Defensively, Joe Roe added seven tackles.

"We made a lot of mistakes early," Everett said. "Offensively,

we're still behind where we need to be, but defensively, we're doing well. ...Everyone was excited (after the victory), but we understand what that means - it's just one win. ...Our kids know we've got to put that behind them and look at the next game."
