City hall goes after sign for an Alto ATV event

By BRENDA ALLUMS news1@kilgorenewsherald.com

Oscar Still is defying an order from the city of Kilgore to remove a sign advertising an offroad event in Alto.

Earlier in the week, the Kilgore City Council denied Still's request for a variance in the city's sign code, which would allow him to place a portable sign at the Intersection of Hwys. 259, 349 and 31.

The sign was erected prior to the city council meeting where the item was on the agenda.

City staff recommended the council deny Still permission to place the sign in the city's rightof way.

On Wednesday Still was served with a citation for illegal placement of a sign by the city's Code Enforcement Officer Frank Baggett.

"The city has given Mr. Still until the end of the week (Friday) to remove the sign," City Manager Jeff Howell said. "After that, each day can be considered a separate offense with a fine up to $500 daily."

The Kilgore News Herald erroneously reported yesterday that the sign had been removed.

Still is the owner of Rabbit Creek RV Park and Mountain

Mud Blast, which sponsors the Texas Redneck Games. This year Still has partnered with Shiloh Ridge Off-Road Park in Alto and plans to hold the event there Aug. 4-6.

At one time, the city did grant Still a variance to advertise a local event.

However, city council members felt this sign should not be allowed.

Attempts by the newspaper to contact Still today were unsuccessful.
