LOCAL SPORTS IN BRIEF TRACK & FIELD Overton athletes headed to state meet Overton High School senior Justin Arnold, junior Marcus Mitchell and sophomore Megan Cook will represent OHS and this area in the UIL State Track & Field Championships in Austin next weekend, May 12-13. Arnold will compete in the 3200 meter run after qualifying with a run of 10:19 at the Class 1A regional track & field meet in Nacogdoches recently. Success is nothing new to Arnold, who has been the District 24-A champion and area champion in the event for the last two years. Mitchell will compete in the discus at the state meet, having won the event at regionals, and Cook will compete in the pole vault. She also won that contest at regionals. FOOTBALL Cook benefit game Saturday The East Texas Wolves and the Texas XTreme of the Texas United Football League will play a benefit game for Leo Cook's family on Saturday at 7 p.m. at James Bamberg Stadium in Liberty City. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children 12. Cook, who was a junior at SHS, passed away in March after a long battle with cancer. All proceeds from this game will go to his family to help with medical expenses. ATHLETICS Sabine's banquet is May 15 The Sabine High School Athletic Banquet will be held on Monday, May 15 at 6:30 pm at Shallow Creek Country Club. Cost is $7 per person. BASEBALL Harkrider's camp begins May 30 Kilgore High School head baseball coach Tim Harkrider will conduct his annual baseball camp at Driller Park beginning Tuesday, May 30 and concluding Friday, June 2. Morning sessions - 9:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. - will be for ages 5 through 10. Afternoon sessions - 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. - will be for ages 11 through 14. Cost of the camp is $60 per child, and in addition to instruction of baseball fundamentals and competitions during the week, each child will receive a camp T-shirt. Children should bring standard baseball equipment with them. Registration will be held May 30 beginning 30 minutes prior to each session. GOLF Oilmen's tourney June 9-10 The East Texas Oil Men's Golf Association will sponsor the East Texas Treatment Center Golf Classic June 9-10 at Meadowbrook Country Club in Kilgore. This year will mark the 44th year for the Oil Men's Golf Association to sponsor this two-person scramble, which benefits the East Texas Treatment Center. A morning flight will begin at 7:30 a.m. and an afternoon flight at 1 p.m. Entry fee is $500 per team, which includes breakfast and lunch both days for both players, green and cart fee, door prizes and Saturday night dinner for the players and one guest each. Prizes will be awarded to the first four places of each flight based on a full field. First place, $800; second, $600; third, $500; and fourth, $200. The hole-in-one contest (hole No. 6), sponsored by Laird Insurance Agency and The Ward Agency, is worth $15,000. In addition, a drawing will be held for two players who will have an opportunity for a hole-in-one cash prize of $100,000 on a designated hole separate from tournament play. Both days will include an electronics package for a Hole-In-One on hole No. 15. Course food and drinks will be provided by Made-Rite, McAlister's Deli, Longview Too AMBUCS, Charlie's Sno-Balls, Smith Services, Dialog Wireline and Grant and Kristy Boyd. Breakfast provided by area bankers and prepared by K-K Mobbs Construction. Lunch Friday will be provided by Henderson Rotary and Saturday by Kilgore Rotary. The Saturday night meal will be provided by Dialog Wireline. Door prizes, silent auction and special ladies-only door prizes will be awarded, including a Gorham 24-percent lead crystal vase, donated by Max Daiches Jewelers of Kilgore. A Pitt's and Spitt's Cooker with sound system will be raffled off Saturday night valued at $8,500. The cooker giveaway is sponsored by OMEGA Oilfield Services, V. Fred Rogers Estate, Loud & Clear Radio Shack and Reece Nichols/Edward Jones. Tickets $20 each and can be purchased at the East Texas Treatment Center. You need not be present to win. SOCCER Annual Bulldog camp in July The annual soccer camp hosted by Kilgore High School will be held July 10-14. Children ages kindergarten through eighth grade will be instructed in the morning sessions - 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. - and children ages ninth grade through 12th grade will be instructed during the evening, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Early registration is ongoing; there is a $50 fee for the morning session students, and a $40 fee for evening session students. Each camper will receive a camp T-shirt and be divided into groups, so they may participate with other campers the same age. Each group will also have competitions and awards will be given at the end of camp.
