City will consider Main Street program

By BRENDA Allums news1@kilgorenewsherald.com

Kilgore City Commissioners are looking at a short agenda for Tuesday night's meeting. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. rather than the usual 5:30 p.m.Consideration of a letter of intent to apply for reinstatement into the Main Street Program highlights the meeting.

Kilgore was once a Main Street City, but withdrew from the program several years ago.

Communities are using the Main Street approach to revitalize their traditional commercial districts to help with economic development, historic preservation, city management and urban and community planning programs.

The program provides participating communities with the training, tools, information, and networking need to be successful in revitalization and growth projects.

One of the primary activities is to identify local needs and provide corresponding on-site consulting and training services. These services include help establish local programs, plan revitalization strategies, develop detailed implementation plans, and solve specific problems in a Main Street district. These programs also provide advice and guidance directly to local Main Street staff and volunteers about a variety of revitalization topics and issues.

Commissioners are also expected to consider an agreement with the Kilgore ISD for use of Driller Field.
