HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL/ SOFTBALL

After TAKS testing break, KHS teams play at Hallsville tonight

If the weather will allow it, the Kilgore High School baseball and softball teams are both scheduled to be in action tonight for the first time in a week.

The KHS squads have been off since last weekend, not playing their usual Tuesday night games due to TAKS testing at the school. Both teams own at least a share of first place in District 17-4A competition, and both have important games tonight in Hallsville. Both also begin at 6 p.m.

Rain was coming down at press time, and is in the forecast for this afternoon. The games, however, were still scheduled when the Kilgore News Herald went to press. The KHS softball team is 15-4 overall,

10-2 in district play and tied for first place with Marshall and Whitehouse. Tonight's opponent, the Hallsville LadyCats, are back a distance in the standings but still in the hunt (the top three teams from each district make the playoffs). Both Marshall (at Henderson tonight) and Whitehouse (hosting Jacksonville) face teams that are at or near the bottom of the standings, so the pressure is on KHS to win.

KHS is led at the plate by Shelby Savony, hitting a red-hot .481, with nine home runs and 30 RBI.

The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Kasey Polk, and scheduled to host Whitehouse on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Stream-Flo Field, located right beside Driller Park.

Coach Tim Harkrider's Bulldogs are 17-5 overall, and all alone in first place with a 9-1 district record. Marshall and

tonight's opponent, Hallsville, are just a game behind, though, at 8-2 in district play. So to get a more comfortable feeling, the Bulldogs need to pull tonight's game out on the road.

Like the softball team, the Diamond 'Dogs also host Whitehouse tomorrow. First pitch at Driller is scheduled for 3 p.m.

On the mound for the Bulldogs will be Casey Whitmer (7-1).
