A look at provisions in Senate school improvement bill

By The Associated Press

(AP) A proposal by Sen. Florence Shapiro, a Plano Republican and leader of the Senate Education Committee, would provide funding for new school programs and teacher raises. Similar measures have been filed in the House. Shapiro's bill would:

- Give a $2,000 pay raise to all teachers, school nurses, counselors and librarians.

- Direct schools to design an incentive program to reward teachers who improve student performance.

- Establish systems to track students' academic improvement and progress toward graduation as well as districts' financial records and budget proposals.

- Give high schools $500 per student to establish measures to improve high school graduation rates and college preparation.

- Direct state K-12 and higher education officials to align their curriculums.
