KILGOROUND

BRENDA ALLUMS

VISITORS TO Kilgore City Hall may have missed one of the friendly ladies working behind the front counter recently. Joyce Speer is out on sick leave for a few weeks recovering from surgery. We've missed you Joyce, and hope to see you back at work soon.

THIS IS a tale of woe -sort of ... Bea and Don Lawler just returned from a trip to Poland and Yugoslavia, and had a wonderful time. Ask to see the pictures of the trip and you get a sheepish look from Don. Seems he lost the camera and all the photos. But the trip did have an unexpected perk. They missed their connection in Paris and Air France put them up in a nice hotel for the night.

Speaking of Don, Tuesday at the city commission meeting he was telling us all about the trip, much to the chagrin of Mayor Joe T. Parker who is known for starting the meetings

promptly at 5:30 p.m. At 5:35 p.m. the Mayor loudly reminded Don the meeting needed to start. "I'm waiting on Janice (Hancock) to get here," Don said. Commissioner Randy Renshaw, Joe and several others chimed in, "She's on vacation." So Don proceeded to take his place on the commission and work began.

SATURDAY night Kilgore will be ALIVE with Elvis impersonators. Some of Kilgore most respected (?) citizens are vying for the title of "King of Kilgore" at the Sock Hop sponsored by the East Texas Treatment Center. Pull out your letter jackets and poodle skirts and go out to the armory and vote for your favorite Elvis. Good thing the contest is Saturday night -the losers may be found Sunday "Crying in the Chapel."

THIS GOES in the you're never too old to learn category or I never know because I really didn't want to know .. However ... Did you know rocks used in seal coating roads come in different weights and sizes. The Texas HIghway Department uses a larger, heavier rock while cities like Kilgore use smaller, lighter rock. Tim Hobbs told me that was the reason you get more chips in your windshield on highways than city streets. He said you could take a handful of the rock they use for Kilgore streets and throw it at your windshield and it won't break. Thanks Tim, but I'll take your word for it.

THIS WEEKEND promises to be busy for everyone a FFA show, the East Texas Treatment Center fund-raisers, the Beta Sigma Phi First Lady Banquet, friends of the Library Membership Drive and no telling what else. Please try to attend some of these events and support your friend, neighbors and worthy causes.

OKAY, there won't be a double national championship at the University of Texas this year. But my Longhorns did give it a good try. But those Tigers from LSU are hungry for national recognition. So if you can't be in the Final Four, then it's my philosophy, root for the team that knocked you out. Gooooo, Tigers!
