SOFTBALL

Sabine beats Mineola; now 3-1 in district

The Sabine High School girls softball team might just do something a lot of Sabine teams haven't done in recent memory: make the playoffs.

The Lady Cardinals are off to a good start, having defeated Mineola convincingly, 11-0, on Friday night.

Sabine with that win is now 3-1 in District 13-3A, and hosts Gladewater, a team the Lady Cards have already defeated once this year, on Tuesday.

Coach Lisa Sandovall's Lady Cards had 16 hits against Mineola, and allowed just two. Mineola had three errors; Sabine had none.

Rileigh Barber got the win on the mound for SHS. She struck out five in seven innings.

Megan Freeman went 2-for-5 for Sabine with a triple, a single, 2 RBI and scored three times. Catcher Sandy James went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, 2 RBI, and also scored three times.

Also for Sabine, Barber went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, 4 RBI and scored twice. Cortnee Ryan went 3-for-5 and had 2 RBI. Chelsea Headley went 2-for-5, both singles, and scored once. Jordan Gabriel went 2-for-5 with a double, a single and scored twice. And Ashleigh Smith had a single and an RBI.

GOLF

'Night' tournament is Friday

Have you ever thought that it might be fun to go play golf at night?

Well, the Kilgore Chamber of Commerce and City National Bank have a deal for you.

The bank and the chamber are sponsoring the first Shot in the Dark golf tournament at MCC on Friday, March 24 at Meadowbrook Country Club, right here in Kilgore on Houston Street. Here's the gig - it's a nighttime tournament, and the course will be lit.

The cost is $50 for each player, which includes range balls, green fees, golf cart, glow stuff and dinner. Each team consists of four players, assigned by handicap. You may choose your own team or be assigned a team by the tournament's committee.

Also, sponsors for the event are still being sought.

Members of the committee are Bobby Beane (Laird Insurance), Patty Ford (Kilgore College), Melissa Harris (SATCOM Technologies Vertex), Carolyn Johnston (City National Bank), Harvey McClendon (Laird Insurance), Kenneth Plunk (Citizens Bank), Darla Rutland (Guaranty Bank) and Roland Velvin (City National Bank).
