Girls rock Lady Mavs with 11 runs
AMANDA MIXON It might be an understatement to say that Kilgore High School catcher Shelby Savony likes hitting in the Lady Bulldogs' new softball park.
And boy, did Marshall High School ever find that out on Friday night.
Savony had two home runs - both two-run shots - and collected 5 RBI Friday as the Lady Bulldogs pounded Marshall, 11-2, at Stream-Flo Field. She's 5-of-6 in the new park in two games.
The win gave coach Kasey Polk's Lady Bulldogs a 9-2 overall record, but most importantly, they are 4-0 in District 17-4A, at the top of the standings all by themselves.
Like the baseball team, Kilgore will travel to Pine Tree on Tuesday night, then host Hallsville on Friday.
In other games around the district on Friday: Whitehouse defeated Hallsville, 3-1; Nacogdoches defeated Henderson, 6-2; and Pine Tree beat Jacksonville, but no score was available at press time.
The Lady Bulldogs' 4-0 district record puts them a game in front of Whitehouse and Marshall, who are each 3-1.
A g a i n s t Ma r s h a l l , Savony gave teammate and p i t c h e r Mackenzie Sharp an early cushion. With Millicent Dickey standing on base in the bottom of the first inning, Savony stepped fully into a pitch by Lady Mavericks' starter Dora Buchanan, and got all of it, sending it out of the park and giving the Lady 'Dogs a 2-0 lead.
MACKENZIE SHARP The exact same scenario happened again in the bottom of the third, and Kilgore went up 4-0, again with Dickey on base and Savony slapping a shot over the fence.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Bulldogs turned the offense loose, scoring five more runs to take a 9-0 lead. Kilgore would finish with 10 hits on the night, and almost every starter had at least one hit.
Marshall scored two runs in the fifth inning, far too late to change the game's result.
The Lady Mavericks hurt themselves almost as badly as Kilgore hurt them - Marshall committed six errors.
Senior Mackenzie Sharp (6-2) got another win. Sharp pitched the entire seven innings, allowing five hits, but walking only two and getting 11 strikeouts. She has 93 strikeouts so far this season. Buchanon took the loss, pitching three innings but allowing seven runs and getting three strikeouts.
Savony was 3-for-3 on the
night, and Sydnay Dick had a
double. City/Town
