County Youth Project Show approaching

Daniel Prior Daniel Prior Rusk County Youth Project Show Fast Approaching

Saturday Feb. 28th marked the rabbit validation for all Rusk County youth showing rabbits at the Youth Project Show March 22-25. The Rabbit Show is just one area in which county youth will show market animals which they have fed and cared for. Raising and showing rabbits is an ideal project for youth who are participating for the first time or for those living in an urban environment where space might not allow them to raise larger market animals.

Rabbits are purchased by the youth sometime prior to validation. Average price is $20 each and exhibitors buy 4 rabbits which they will later cull to 3 for a pen. The Project Show usually has 70 -90 pens competing. Only the top 17 rabbit pens will sale to the public on March 25th.

Rabbit projects help 4-H and FFA members learn principles of nutrition, care, and grooming. The average cost of raising a market rabbit project is $160. This includes the cost of the rabbits, feed and other management requirements. Youth projects help young adults learn responsibility and economics of agricultural investments. The skills acquired will help them as they move into real world situations. For further information on the Youth Project Show contact Rusk County Extension Office.
