Jones a first-teamer
Mitchell, Daniels, Roberts are honorable mentions
Jones was named to the first team defense of the Associated Press’ Sports Editors Class 4A AllState team, chosen by AP sports editors from across the state. And he wasn’t the only Bulldog recognized. Center Lon Roberts, fellow defensive end Wayne Daniels, and tight end Britt Mitchell all were AllState honorable mentions. Jones and Mitchell have both verbally committed to the University of Texas. Roberts has already graduated from Kilgore High School, and is on his way to continuing his education and football career at the University of Houston. Daniels had previously committed verbally to Kansas State University, but said earlier this week he may be reconsidering his decision following the retirement of KSU head coach Bill Snyder. The AP sports editors select All-State teams from each of the UIL’s classifications, 1A through 5A. The selections are based solely on the regular season — playoff numbers don’t get considered. Dallas Wilson linebacker Sergio Kindle was named the 4A defensive player of the year, and Highland Park quarterback Matthew Stafford the 4A offensive player of the year. A respected recruiting web site — www.rivals.com — has Jones ranked 25th among high school prospects anywhere in the United States, and has him ranked as the top weak side defensive end in the country. The same site also talks highly of Roberts (listed as a guard, rather than a center), and Mitchell, and places him among the nation’s best tight ends. Daniels is listed among the best strong side defensive linemen in the U.S., and also as a tight end.
