Rep. Louie Gohmert Rep. Louie Gohmert Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) has completed the paperwork to file for re-election to represent the First District of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives, and will officially file within the next day or two.

Gohmert, during his first term in Congress, says he was one of the only freshman lawmakers to have a bill on the House floor this session.

The bill, Secure Assess to Justice and Court Protection Act of 2005, was passed by a significant majority, 375 to 45.

Following a rash of high profile attacks in and around the nation's courthouses – including the February attacks at the Smith County Courthouse – Gohmert introduced legislation to discourage and help prevent future violence in courthouses.

He led a Congressional Task Force on Improving the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to East Texas.

“Members of the U.S. House of Representatives heard from local East Texas citizens and business owners regarding effective common sense approaches to improving the environment without harming businesses and the families they feed,” a Gohmert spokesman said.

As a member of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus and the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Claims, Gohmert is firmly against illegal immigration and is working to secure U.S. borders.

“This year, Rep. Gohmert has co-sponsored several bills that will strengthen our border security and make it harder for terrorists and other illegal aliens to use loop-holes in our laws to obtain identification and move around our communities freely,” his spokesman said.

Gohmert also offered an amendment to the U.N. Reform Act of 2005 that would prohibit the U.S. financial assistance to member nations that vote in opposition to the U.S. on a consistent basis.

“Although this amendment did not pass, over 100 members of the U.S. House of Representatives supported it.” Gohmert’s spokesman said. “This was an early step down the road to make U.N. member countries accountable for their antiAmerican positions.”

Gohmert was appointed to three U.S. House committees which are beneficial to the citizens of East Texas: House committees on Judiciary, Resources and Small Business.

Prior to being elected to serve in Congress, Gohmert was elected to three terms as District Judge in Smith County. Gohmert was later appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to complete a term as Chief Justice of the 12th Court of Appeals.

He received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, where he was class president and served as a Brigade Commander of the Corps of Cadets. He was also class president while attending Baylor School of Law. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army.

Gohmert and his wife Kathy are parents of three daughters Katy, Caroline, and Sarah. He is a member of the Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, where has been a deacon and Sunday school teacher.

He has served as president of the South Tyler Rotary Club, director of Leadership Tyler and as director of Centrepoint Ministries. He has served on the Boy Scout East Texas District Board of Directors.
