KILGOROUND

WINSTON GARDNER

ITEMIZING: Do squirrels observe Christmas? You can bet they do, especially at our house if they don't have some kind of disease. The one we have in mind is a baby, which spent at least a night behind closed doors where his feeble noises could be finally heard. It took some phoning, but we finally reached the city's "animal man" who would know what to do.

THE name of the lady, sometime called the animal woman, turned out to be Tammy McDaniel, who works under Supt B. J. Owen in the Kilgore Police Dept. Tammy donned her gloves, took the baby squirrel outside and let him hop away, presumably to join his parents and wait for Christmas.

IT WASN'T the first time Tammy had rescued animals who had gotten into trouble. She also deals in cats, dogs, skunks, deer or whatever comes along.

+++ IN OTHER WORDS: A special called meeting of members of Kilgore Meadowbrook Country Club will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 6 p.m. at the club. If unable to attend, please return a proxy prior to Tuesday, Dec. 13, it was announced by Jo Maxwell, secretary of the board of directors.

HOW NOT to be injured in a car accident: Gore Kemp can tell you from experience. Make sure that your seat belt is in place and working, along with your air bag. Gore escaped serious injury earlier this week but he’s still sore from the experience and his car was totaled.

LOTS of things are going on these days and sometimes we lose track of events. But remember this one: “Holiday Happenings in Historic Homes.” They are scheduled at these homes: The Devonne Godfrey Petty home at 1100 Dudley Road; the home of Dr. and Mrs. Clark W. Langley at 724 Woodlawn; the John and Carroll Bolton home at 112 Pine Street and the Dickson L. Griffin home at 2003 Broadway.

+++

ALSO, there will be musical events from 4 to 8 p.m. by the Kilgore Keyboard Orchestra at the Van Cliburn Auditorium and the Anne Dean Turk Fine Arts Building, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. There will be a come and go reception at Gallery TwoO-Five, 205 N. Kilgore Street, following the home tour.

THESE events are sponsored by the Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation, benefiting the Meadowbrook local historic district.

MAYBE it was Christmas shopping, but whatever it was it took some of the Pearl Harbor remembrance out of Dec. 7. Kilgore. Like hundreds of cities, we knew nothing at all about what was happening at Pearl Harbor. Because of the time difference, we never knew of the Japanese attack until it was too late. It was the start of a war that would unite this country as never before, at a cost of hundreds of thousands of lives. Here’s one salute to those who served-and died on battlegrounds around the world.
