‘Willie’ impersonator joins Axbergs here tomorrow night

Mo Truman, Willie Nelson impersonator Mo Truman, Willie Nelson impersonator If you hear a voice and it’s singing “I just can’t wait to be on the road again,” and you think it’s Willie, you might take a second look.

Mo Truman, an ex-coal miner from West Virginia, is turning heads with his renditions of songs made famous by Willie Nelson. “Willie Nelson said I sound more like Willie Nelson then he does,” said Truman.

Truman will be performing with Dennis Ross and the Axberg Brothers Saturday night at the World’s Richest Acre stage on Commerce Street.

Truman said he has been doing Willie since 1975 when he joined a local band and one of the band members said “man you sound just like Willie. I thought I sounded more like Waylon Jennings,” said Truman. “So, from then until now, I’ve been doing nothing but Willie.”

Truman said he does mostly Nelson’s songs but he has written a few of his own. “When do my own stuff people think they are songs Willie has done,” said Truman.

Truman said he does a lot of performances at the Memories Theater in Pigeon Forge, TN., where he performs with a lot of other impersonators. “I’ve performed there with Rick Sharp who is from Kilgore and does Waylon Jennings impersonations,” said Truman.

Truman said about a year ago he came out with a CD of his own titled a Tribute to Willie. “Doing what I do has opened up so many doors for me,” said Truman. “I’ve gotten to perform with Texan Johnnie Lee, Reba McIntyre and Patty Loveless.”

Truman said when he first started out he had to work at it in some areas but now he has been doing it for so long it just comes easy.

Tye Weeks, owner of TDT Transportation and Construction from Kilgore, is Truman’s manager. “It was great finally getting Truman to finally come to Texas,” said Weeks. “Truman will be performing downtown

at the World’s Richest

Acre Saturday night during the Festival of Lights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.”

Weeks said if anyone is interested in booking Truman call 903) 984-0303 for booking information and available dates.
