KILGOROUND

WINSTON GARDNER
WINSTON GARDNER SO, THEY SAY, we won't have Highway 259 to kick around any more after the coming month of June.

+++

AND who says so? None other than officials of TxDoT which, when translated, means Texas Department of Transportation.

IN some ways, though, we will miss those bumps and grinds. And the way those changes are being installed. Perhaps we will learn that slower means less danger and that horn blowing is outdated.

+++

WHAT ABOUT those other changes which some talk about being needed? Some believe it would be better if we had a traffic light at the intersection of Higginbotham and Stone Road. At present it takes some doing for all of us to keep track of watching for traffic from the left and right.

THE same is true of the intersection at Houston and Higginbotham, where you can start but probably will have to stop because a car is bearing down on you on the right, and fast.

+++

BUT remember, it's all up to TxDot.

HERE 'N there: Remember a recipe called quiche? It was popular in an era when quiche was in all the cook books. Essentials for the recipe included ground beef, cheese and a few other things. Our daughter-in-law, Ann Gardner, accompanied by Lin Gardner, brought along a copy of the book with the title 'Today's Cooks in the Historic East Texas Oil Field."

+++

AFTER THE opening of the East Texas Oil Museum on Oct. 3, 1980, people from all over the world have come to Kilgore to see what an oil boom looked like. And that quiche sure was yummy.

MOTHER'S DAY was a great day for Dollie Mae Luster. Her gift, consisting of a single red flower in a crushed Dr. Pepper can, was left on her front porch. The trouble was, though, there was no hint as to who brought it. But her special mystery was solved this past Sunday at church. Her friend, Lavon Lynch, admitted he had brought it. And Dollie Mae treasures the flower above all else.
