Roberts files for Place 3

Kilgore High School Orchestra Director Tristan Roberts, 25, has filed his paperwork with City Hall to run for Place 3 on the city council against incumbent Neil Barr, who is running for re-election.

Barr, 74, said it's only natural that another person is angling for his seat, but he's not letting it go.

On Saturday, February 11, 2012 at 2:46 a.m. Kilgore Police Department Corporal Terry Linder stopped a vehicle for several traffic violations in the 200 block of Henderson Blvd, Kilgore, Texas. The driver of the vehicle was identified as Jedarious Rashad Lowery, 19 years of age, from Dallas, Texas.

During the stop, Corporal Linder noted evidence of drug activity within the vehicle.

Hotel tax raises millions for local tourism

With eight hotels and motels operating here, each year since 2005 the City of Kilgore has collected between $186,000 and $342,000 in taxes to be reinvested in tourism through several local organizations.

For the fourth month in a row, Kilgore's sales tax showed a decline as it continues to fall behind statewide increases in revenue.

Texas' sales tax collections continued their upward climb in January at $2 billion brought in from December sales, 9.5 percent more than the same month last year. But Kilgore's allocation this month fell by 2.53 percent against the previous year.

Channel 5 may be due for a facelift if the city pursues a new fee funding public education.

During Tuesday's council meeting, Kilgore City Manager Scott Sellers plans to bring the council up-to-speed on Public Education Government channel fees and how they can be utilized here to fund new broadcasting equipment.

Pirtle community marks 165 years

After well over a century of firmly entrenching itself within the history of Texas, the Pirtle Community has finally been given a sign of appreciation.

“Pirtle is one of the oldest communities in Texas,” said Dudley Plaisance Jr. of the Pirtle Methodist Church. Pirtle is just south of Kilgore on Hwy. 259.

A single, anonymous act of charity has paid off the mortgage of Longview’s House of Hope shelter for homeless women and children.

House of Hope was founded in 2006 by Sister Helen Johnson. Johnson has worked diligently with her staff to offer an outlet of hope for wayward women and children around the U.S.
