ONCE UPON A TIME in Kilgore ( I always wanted to be able to do that), the water was so bad that two water companies pumped water from a spring-fed creek to filter, bottle and deliver first to the pharmacies and then to homes.

In earlier days many farmers owned racehorses. Someone discovered that putting a calm, sedate goat in the same stable as a high-strung horse would have a positive effect on the horse. When a race was coming up, it wasn’t unusual for someone to try to steal the goat from a competitor’s barn.

Everyone talks about the obesity epidemic, but no one speaks for those of us who are overweight by accepted standards but are still in good shape. I am 33.
