KC votes to begin softball program this fall

For the first time in over three decades, Kilgore College is adding another dimension to its athletic program.

The college board of trustees voted unanimously at its meeting Monday night to approve the addition of a softball program, and also voted to hire Leslie Messina as the program’s first head coach. The plan: to begin play this fall.

Track and field season ended with a bang last weekend for three area track athletes who were good enough to reach the UIL State Track and Field Championships, held at the University of Texas in Austin.

It was the farthest any Sabine High School team had gone into the postseason in some time, but the playoff run for Sabine’s Lady Cardinals softball team ended over the weekend in Henderson.

Overton advances, takes down Cumby

MESQUITE — It’s on to round three of the UIL Class 1A baseball playoffs for Overton High School.

A six-caliber blast by the Mustangs in the second inning was the big factor in propelling Overton to a 7-3 defeat of Cumby in Saturday’s one-game-only playoff at Dr. Ralph Poteet High School in Mesquite.

The annual Kilgore High School baseball camp — taught by the KHS baseball coaching staff and some players — will once again be at Driller Park this year, and is scheduled for Wednesday, June 6 through Friday, June 8.

The cost is $60 per camper, boys ages 5 through 14. The camp will be 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. each day.
