It was arguably the most important game the Kilgore High School boys basketball team had played in 30 years — and they managed to win it, keeping their playoff hopes alive, without two of their best players.

The last Kilgore High School boys basketball team to make the playoffs was the 1981-82 team, who played Liberty Eylau on Feb. 23, 1982. Other happenings that year:

• James Cameron was hired to head up the Kilgore football program, and created the “Ragin’ Red” name.

• Ronald Reagan was in his first term as President of the United States.

Former KHS, A&M standout ‘Babe’ Hallmark passes at 86

Kilgore native and legendary Texas A&M quarterback James L. “Babe” Hallmark has passed; he was 86.

Hallmark was a part of the great Aggie football teams of the 1940s, and starred in the 1944 Orange Bowl game against LSU. His story was chronicled by the News Herald last year.

’Jacks to return this summer

The East Texas Pump Jacks plan to again call Driller Park home this summer.

The Pump Jacks, a franchise in the Texas Collegiate League, have announced they will be back here in Kilgore for a fifth season. Season ticket-holders were notified of the club’s return this week via e-mail.

Kilgore baseball fans, you’re in luck: the Diamond ’Dogs are in the bullpen, and ready to hit the field.

The Bulldogs were to host their annual alumni game this afternoon at 1 p.m. at Driller Park (moved up due to ACT and SAT testing), featuring former players against coach Charles Presley’s current roster.

Sabine girls face Woodville in first round

Boys basketball teams are finishing their regular season schedule, but for the girls, playoff time is just about here.

Both Sabine High School and West Rusk High School girls teams have playoff games in the early portion of the week.
